The manufacture of excellent watches started when Chopard transferred to Geneva in 1920. After 43 years of being run by the Chopard family, the company was acquired by karl Scheufele, a young goldsmith and maker of watches, when the sons of the last watchmaker of the Chopard family, Paul-Andre Chopard, said no to the management of the business.
Chopard started making timepieces when the factory moved to Meyrin-Geneva in 1975. The Happy Diamonds collection was launched in 1976. Between two clear sapphire crystals, there are mobile diamonds that freely floated. These diamonds are featured in the collection. The sports watches on leather bands of the company first appeared in 1980. The jewelry pieces increased the range of the Happy Diamond watches. In the 1980’s, countries like Geneva, Vienna, and Hong Kong became the first locations where the first Chopard boutiques were opened for business.
Millie Miglia and Chopard established a partnership in 1988, and to acknowledge the partnership, every year, Chopard develop special edition Millie Miglia watches. In 1993, the Happy Sport Collection of Chopard came out. In Fleurier, in 1996, Chopard set up its independent movement factory. In the same year, the Calibre 1.96, the first in-house movement of Chopard in the late 20th century was released after many years of designing and forming.
The annual Cannes International Film festival and Chopard made a partnership in 1998. The partnership was started by the encounter between the Co-President of Chopard, President of the Cannes Film Festival, Pierre Viot, and Caroline Gruosi-Scheufele.
Chopard through the Years Powered by a technologically advanced four-barreled caliber, the L.U.C. Quattro watch was released in 2000, the dawn of new millennium. The movement which has a shape of a tonneau, which allows it to twist by itself and with a microcotor which happens to be intentionall off-centered, powered the Chopard L.U.C. The Tonneau watch was released in 2001.
The Happy Spirit Collection was introduced in 2003, and the range of L.U.C. manufacture was increased by Chopard Tourbillon that same year. The collection of Butterfly jewelry pieces and the L.U.C. Regulateur watch was released in 2004. It was in 2005 that the L.U.C. Lunar 1 was launched and the Golden Diamonds and the Copacabana collections were introduced.
The Happy Diamond watch collection’s 30th anniversary and the movement factory’s 10th anniversary were celebrated by the company in 2006. In the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, the Festival’s 60th anniversary, Chopard in cooperation with Valentino, developed the Red Carpet Collection. Celebrities-inspired 60 high jewelry pieces were designed by Caroline Scheufele, and to complement the 10 jewels of the company, 10 gowns were created by Valentino.
Chopard has three production places situated in Pforzheim in Germany, and in Fleurier and Geneva in Switzerland. The company has over 90 Chopard boutiques, hundreds of licensed retailers in the US, and thousands of retailers in major cities around the world. Chopard Company partnered with the international major precious stone supplier, the New York William Goldberg.
